Study Tour: Small Hydro Power in Austria
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is organizing a study tour to support the ongoing capacity building efforts in the field of Small Hydro Power (SHP) in several developing countries namely; Zambia, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar and Cameroon. The purpose of the study tour is to increase awareness on the services provided by UNIDO’s SHP Programme as well as to learn from the Austrian SHP experience. As such, the programme starts with an introduction to UNIDO’s SHP programme, which aims to increase the share of small and micro hydropower in the energy mix by supporting the development of policy and regulatory frameworks conducive to the adoption of SHP, by building national institutional and technical capacity in the SHP field and by guiding investors willing to enter the SHP market through information and knowledge sharing. The session will continue with a presentation on the Austrian SHP scene, as Austria is one of the early developers of hydropower with about 2800 SHP sites connected to the grid. After the presentations, the participants will have the opportunity to visit several SHP sites in and outside of Vienna enabling them to have first-hand insights in the facilities and their operations. The event brings together UNIDO Project managers and coordinators, Austrian SHP operators and experts as well as public and private sector representatives from the above mentioned countries with the shared overall objetive of further advancing SHP infrastructure.
